In general I agree with letting prices go up. But when it comes to doubling or tripling prices in a situation of no real loss of product, I do think government has an interest in protecting citizens such as the elderly or disabled. Particularly since government has taken on the responsibility of providing for them.

I still don’t think it’s justifiable, not when many retail stores have set aside a special time for high-risk shoppers to make purchases, during which I can’t imagine any community store (even big box stores) charging the elderly or disabled people more than a reasonable price for product. They are the ones that “price gouging” ultimately protects by keeping products on the shelves, encouraging shoppers with means to behave responsibly and not hysterically.

By the government stepping it, it only encourages hysteria and unreasonable behavior because it distorts the reality of the supply/demand relationship. If all of a sudden shelves are empty because people panicked and over-purchased goods at regular price, it leads to more “panic-buying” at regular price. But if suddenly the shelves are stocked normally but only the price is seemingly unreasonably high, folks are more likely to re-evaluate how much product they really want to invest in hoarding and stockpiling at the expense of those less fortunate than them. “Price gouging” isn’t about big box stores or mom n pop shops trying to pull a fast one and make a quick buck in a crisis, though individual folks certainly may be opportunistic like that, but it’s about stores protecting their inventory, protecting their processes of consistent income, and ultimately protecting their consumers because if their consumers, you know, die or something, there’s no one left to buy their products!
