Last week in the NYT, a letter writer commented on the proposal to close a number of streets in Manhattan so restaurants could put tables on the street to increase the number of patrons yet still meet social distancing requirements for tables. The writer raised an important point: “What about my elderly mother who must be picked up in front of her building because she cannot walk the distance to a street with cars? Is she doomed to never leave her apartment?”. While I love the idea of pedestrian malls, we must also consider whether our desires eclipse our elders and the disabled from being able to enjoy their lives as well. Food for though

There are some coastal towns in OR that would look really good as pedestrian only and parking would be created in outer perimeters. Cannon Beach, OR is one good example of a town that would be great for walking only. Just have to take it up with the mayor and town council. Then get residents’ input too.
