Hello friends. Thank you for the encouragement. But to produce the TV programs and guidebooks and tours that we have that way we do (which you seem to appreciate–thank you!), I need to be focused. I’ve spent a life-time loving Europe and learning Europe–it’s my history education, it’s my family heritage, it’s the place I love most. It’s also the best way I can inspire the most Americans to reach out and become more friendly with the world. I’ll leave other regions to experts on those areas. Happy travels!

I worked and studied in Berlin for several years in the seventies and eighties, and still have several friends there. Berlin is truly a fascinating place in so many different ways, and the Reichstag is a compelling symbol of Germany’s history and the Germans’ “Auseinandersetzung” (just call it “struggle”) with their past. I’ve visited the dome several times, and also participated in two guided tours of the building and dome sponsored by the German government, one in German (mainly with Germans) and one in English (just my husband and I, and a group of American college students taking an international course in Berlin).

To say the difference in the two guided tours was “night and day” would be an understatement — the Germans were of course very serious and paid attention; the American students seemed oblivious to where they were, and were more interested in practicing their American cheer leading and gymnastics (no joke) and general “chatting” than listening to our guide. Frankly, it was an embarrassment to see how clueless and uninterested a group of American students on an international program in Berlin, of all places, were about German history. I completely agree with you, Rick, that we have to have an appreciation of history to understand the world, and thank you for continuing to spread the word and enlighten us.
